[2009] The Gift of the Years

Age and death are not synonyms, yet so many of us define our golden years as anything but golden.  We see our changing bodies and the challenges of aging as a death sentence, the end of youth, exuberance and aliveness. An end yes…but many of us have not looked to what may really be a beginning, an adventure …

A opportunity for discovering hidden gifts that have waited for us, maturing and ripening to finally reveal their true nature as we reach these wise years.

This is a special period of life –

a time to find the beauty of what it means to age well

a time of profound purpose

a time of  ushering in a deeper spiritual sense of self and our world

As we age we must be willing to let go of the life we had planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us. To become available for the gift of years takes great courage.

During our time together we will use the writings of Joan Chittister – The Gift of the Years to:

Explore and reflect upon the many dimensions of aging, opening our mind and our hearts, giving honor and attention to this phase of our life.

Take our own pulse – traveling within to find the regrets, sorrows, losses, concerns, potentials, joys and gifts unique to us and our aging.

Discover our sense of purpose and the profound meaning this time of our life offers.

Embrace these capstone years to allow us to not just live but to become more fully alive than ever.
